A special place for Pamela has always been the plan. After building a raised area with dirt and sand bags, it was ready to cover with concrete.
Portland Cement, Quikrete Sand (from Home Depot) and a little water will assist in creating a rock like base for Pamela to show off. My Jumbo Platform Truck from Uline made transporting the 90 lb. bags of concrete and 50 lb. bags of sand a lot easier. The wheel barrel and rubber gloves (Home Depot) will allow a place and way to mix the concrete, sand and water. The trowels (Home Depot) will assist in shaping the mixed concrete to resemble a large rock. A dust mask is a good safety measure to protect you from breathing the concrete dust.
The ratio of concrete to sand and water will determine the texture of the mix. I used 45 lbs. of concrete to 200 lbs. of sand for a manageable amount in my wheel barrel. The water was between 3 to 4 gallons. I recommend adding the water slowly to get the consistency you want. This project required 3 wheel barrels full of mixed concrete. I used tree cuttings from recently pruned pine trees for forms to support the concrete.
Using your hand to sprinkle water from a bucket on the concrete will allow you to continue shaping it after pouring. Sprinkling lightly with water for the next couple of days will reduce the possibility of cracking. After the concrete has cured, paint will be applied to enhance the rock appearance. Stay tuned for the painting process!
