Kevin & I were invited to Mountain Vista Elementary School – home of the “Wildcats” – to make a presentation to five Kindergarten Classes. We made two presentations. The first group gathered in Miss Rangel’s classroom along with teacher Ms. Vasquez – one Kindergarten Class and one Transitional Kindergarten Class. We started with “Dinosaurs” by Steve Brusatte. After covering Earth’s time periods, we discussed a number of Dinosaurs – Plateosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Shunosaurus, Archaeopteryx, Stegosaurus, Spinosaurus, Giganotosaurus, Microraptor, Amargasaurus, Carnotaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Tarbosaurus and Saltasaurus. Many were favorites and some were new to the group. We reviewed some of the Cladograms (Family Trees) for the beginning of Dinosauria and Archosauria – early ancestors of the Dinosaurs. A photo of an actual size T-Rex tooth had the groups in ah! The difference between Movie Dinosaurs and Actual Dinosaurs was a fun topic. The Indominus-Rex was not a real Dinosaur and the real Dilophosaurus portrayed in the first Jurassic Park movie did not have fans on the side of its head. Nor is there any indication from the study of its fossil remains that it spit venom.
I read 3 of my books – “Is a Metal Dinosaur the Right Pet for You?”, “The Shy Triceratops” and “The Dimetrodon Who Wanted to be a Dinosaur” – followed my 2 of Mo Willems books – “Edwina the Dinosaur that didn’t Know She was Extinct” and “Goldi Locks and the Three Dinosaurs”. Then we all practiced drawing dinosaurs using simple shapes. We started by drawing Kevin then a Triceratops. It was great fun and I must say I saw some real talent in the group.
The second group of 3 Kindergarten Classes squeezed into Mrs. Davis room with their teachers Miss Berrington and Ms. Tedmori. We covered the same material. Plus advised the Group the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles has a Carnotaurus and a T-Rex trio on display in Dinosaur Hall. The T-Rex trio – baby, juvenile and adult – is the trio on display in the World! Everyone enjoyed drawing Kevin and then we tried a T-Rex out of an egg.
