Kevin the T-Rex hatchling has made a number of visits to local Libraries and is schedule for August 30th at the Vernon Branch in Los Angeles, CA (see below for details).
Alejandro has been looking forward to his first trip. He was excited about his first ride in the car as well. We reviewed a number of books on the shelves. Then Alejandro and I spent some time at a study table discussing books for our presentation at The City of Camarillo Library on September 18th. This will be Alejandro’s first appearance at “Family Story Time” too!
The Giant book “Dinosaurs” by Steve Brusatte is always a great start. The size of the illustrations makes it easy for everyone to see and the information is very useful for presenting interesting facts about these wonderful animals. We will of course have some fun Dinosaur Tails to Share and a “How to Draw Dinosaurs” Activity following the Reading.
There are a number of books that demonstrate how to use simple shapes and lines to create Dinosaurs. I will be using this method. These books (listed below) are available at The Camarillo City Library. Check with your local Library for availability.
Dinosaurs! A Drawing Book by Michael Emberley (1980)
1-2-3 Draw Dinosaurs and other Prehistoric Animals A step by step guide by Freddie Levin (2001)
Draw 50 Dinosaurs and other Prehistoric Animals by Lee J. Ames (1977)
At the Library you can find Dinosaur Books to meet everyone’s level of interest. A clever book “A Field Guide to Dinosaurs – The Essential Handbook for Travelers in the Mesozoic” by Henry Gee & Luis V. Rey (2003) presents his work of fiction as if Henry were in the Mesozoic observing the Dinosaurs alive in the world. Some of the information is based on what we knew then the rest is Henry’s imagination documenting the Dinosaurs as if they were living and breathing right in front of him. The sketches are in the style of a Naturalist observing life in the wild. An entertaining and educational book for those naturalists at heart.
I’m currently reading “The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs – A New History of a Lost World” by Steve Brusatte (2018). His writing style is excellent. Scientific terms are explained in simple terms. But more importantly you feel you are traveling with Steve on the Adventure. I’ll provide more information when I finish the book
