On August 30th Kevin & I presented Fun Dinosaur Facts & Fiction at the Vernon Library in Los Angeles. In preparation for the arrival of the guests, I set up my camera with a hand held remote. I tested it and was all set for taking pictures during the Reading. I was so involved with the reading and answering questions, I completely forgot about taking pictures! I did take a few after the drawing activity which you will see below. Fortunately, Patty the Librarian took a number of pictures and shared.
We started with Dinosaur Facts using my favorite book “Dinosaurs” by Steve Brusatte. This is a Giant Book 17 inches by 14 inches opening to 28 inches with many illustrations across both pages! Even though it was published in 2008 the information is still relevant. It does a nice job of laying out the time periods of Earth’s History and what was happening. The illustrations for the shape of the land mass Super Continent “Pangaea” before breaking up into the various continents we know today is shown in various stages throughout the book. The Cladograms or Dinosaur “Family Trees” are very helpful. I especially like how each animal is listed with its name, the meaning and pronunciation, along with some history and key information at the bottom page. The key info covers its classification, locations where it has been found (which may be a little dated for some due to recent discoveries), size, predators and the food it ate. Also, an illustration of a world map. Plus, the dinosaurs size compared to man is great!
We covered a wide range of Dinosaurs – Plateosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Shunosaurus, Archaeopteryx, Stegosaurus, Spinosaurus, Giganotosaurus, Microraptor, Amargasaurus, Carnotaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Tarbosaurus and Saltasaurus.
The Fun Tales! I read three of my books “Is a Metal Dinosaur the Right Pet for You?” (Kevin’s Favorite) to introduce PaulsPrehistoricPark.com to the group and assist in explaining Activities at the Park, “The Shy Triceratop” and “The Dimetrodon Who Wanted to be a Dinosaur” were also enjoyed by the group. Followed by “Goldi Locks and the Three Dinosaurs” and “Edwina the Dinosaur that Didn’t Know She was Extinct” both by Mo Willems are always a hit with the crowd!
Then it was time for Our “How to Draw Dinosaurs” Activity. You Can Draw a Dinosaur using simple circles, ovals and egg shapes to start.
Mom & Dad join the kids with this activity. Brother & Sister pose with their drawings and finally I get a smile out of Brother. One young man was on his second drawing. We drew Kevin hatching from his egg. I demonstrated an adult T-Rex and an Amargasaurus too! It was a Great Deal of Fun! I provided some references for books to continue practicing drawing dinosaurs. The Library displayed other books they had to reinforce the activity too.
You can see step by step drawings of Prehistoric Animals in my post May 4, 2018 “How to Draw Dinosaurs and other Prehistoric Beasts”.
