These two T-Rexes arrived on May 14th. I named them after characters in my favorite comic strip “Calvin and Hobbes” by Bill Watterson. Calvin’s amazing imagination and adventures with his stuffed tiger – Hobbes, still bring smiles and laughter. While Bill Watterson discontinued his comic strip many years ago, Calvin and Hobbes live on through the many books published and are still available. Amazon.com has them! Calvin often imagined himself as a Tyrannosaur Rex. When I saw these T-Rexes at Somis Koi, I was immediately reminded of Calvin by the larger one.
The Artists that created these Tyrannosaurs uses the Green and Brassy Gold as their signature for finishing Dinosaurs. You will be seeing more of these Artists work – two brothers in Mexico – and hopefully a story about the “Men Behind the Green”, as well.
I prefer the sculptures unpainted to start, but I liked this color. So, I have left it alone for the most part. The eyes were hard to see with the dark coloring especially on the small one. I used some Gloss Marigold to make them stand out.
The larger one is a little top heavy with that huge head. I was concerned that it might blow over in strong winds. Therefore, I came up with a concept for a New Base – using the existing concrete stepping stones, 2 galvanized fence posts, green vinyl coated cable and a couple of butterfly plants. First, I added a few buckets of sand raked and leveled. Then replaced the stepping stones. Measured for the distance I wanted between the posts and Dinosaur. Installed the 6-foot-long fence posts using a post pounder leaving about 3 feet remaining above ground. I drilled holes at the top of the posts to add screw eye bolts to assist with attaching the green vinyl cable. I wanted the posts to blend in the background. Galvanized steel will create a chemical reaction with Rust-oleum Spray Paint, causing if to crack and peal in a short period of time. There is a warning on the spray paint can not to use on galvanized steel. However, Rust-oleum’s Latex Paint can be used on Galvanized Steel. I brushed on Rust-oleum Latex Satin Nutmeg.
Tyrannosaurus Rex is probably the Most Famous and Favorite of All Dinosaurs! The largest specimen found is 40 feet long and 12 feet high at the hip named Sue. It’s on display at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. The feather debate for T-Rex runs from none to completely covered to only on the back. The feathers where probably more like the down on chicks. The amount of feathers and where they were located most likely depended on age of the T-Rex and climate it lived. Tyrannosaurus Rex had Bone Crushing Teeth. The largest found to date – 12 inches long, which would make it the largest discovered on any Carnivorous Dinosaur! Tyrannosaurus Rex – Tyrant Lizard King. Named by Barnum Brown who discovered the first partial skeleton in 1900 and presented Tyrannosaurus Rex to the World in 1905.

Stay Tuned for additional accents to make the fence posts look like tree trunks, securing the cable and planting the butterfly bushes. More discoveries on the Tyrannosaurus too!
