Calvin & Hobbes were moved off the stepping stones to complete the planting of the Butterfly Bushes. I have trouble with gophers. As a result, I make wire baskets for all my plants. Yes, it’s a lot of work. However, the alternative is having your Bearded Iris, Roses and other prize plants disappear or be killed overnight by these little beasties. You can purchase the wire mess in a variety of lengths. I do a great deal of planting and find the 25 foot by 4 foot roll at Home Depot the best choice for me. Small Wire Cutters, a Measuring Tape and Blue Nitrile Gloves are all the tools I need to make the right size basket for my projects. I had previously transplanted the Butterfly Plants to larger pots and it was definitely time to get them into the ground.
I decided to paint the stepping stones to better match the surrounding area. I thought the addition of some little dinosaur footprints to the stones would be fun. I made a template from a cardboard shoe box. The first footprint I drew and cut out with an x-acto knife which was used to make the remaining prints. I kept all the cut outs. I may need them for a future project. I placed the template randomly on the stones and used a clay colored paint to make the prints. I throw egg shells in the yard and tell visitors they are from baby dinosaurs. The painted footprints on the stepping stones add credibility to the tale. I took advantage of the Template and painted the other Concrete Stepping Stones in the Park. Those baby dinosaurs really get around.
Now it’s time to place Calvin & Hobbes on their New Perch and reattach the cable. This cable came in very handy a couple of weeks ago when we had winds up to 20 mph. Calvin would have definitely tipped over without it.
