Now it’s time for the final color additions to these Raptors before clear coating. The Mouth and Claws were masked around using blue tape and left-over plastic bags (always repurpose & recycle). I start with an edging of blue tape to outline the details I wish to paint. Then using more tape to attach the plastic that will protect larger areas from overspray. Hammered Deep Green was the color of choice in these areas. Gloss Marigold for Eyes by spraying into the paint cap and applying with an artist brush. Home Depot sells a package with multiple sizes which gives me several options for detailing.
Metallic Apple Red for Tongue and Gloss White for Teeth. Both colors were applied using the Artist Brushes. They are Looking Good on their perch, but a couple more details are still needed.
Next a second coat on the Eyes, Teeth and a touch-up to the Tongues. Now we are ready for some deeper highlights around the Eyes and in the Nostrils. Hammered Deep Green did the trick. After allowing to cure for a day or so a clear is add. Again, starting on their sides. After a couple of hours return upright and finish the clear coat. I used the brush type of clear coat on this project. These guys are ready for their perches outside.
Velociraptors are not as large as those pictured in the Jurassic Park & World Movies. There are other Raptors that can reach the movie size and larger. Deinonychus 10 – 11 feet long and 36 – 42 inches high at the hip with and estimated weight of 176 – 220 lbs. Utahraptor 20 – 23 feet long and 6 feet high at the hip and weighing in at a whopping 1540 – 1875 pounds! However, Velociraptors were actually 5 feet – 6.5 feet long and 18 inches to 28 inches in height at the top of their hip and weight of 33 – 39 lbs.
My Raptors are 18 inches high at the hip. They’re a little over 4 feet long if you adjusted for their current pose to get a straight-line head to tail position. Steve Brusatte’s book “The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs A New History of a Lost World” I’ve been checking out so much from the Library I decided I really needed to add it to my Home Library and purchased it on Amazon. Chapter 8 Dinosaurs Take Flight covers how the Bird – Dinosaur Connection begin and continues to excite us. Raptors have huge brains with expanded forebrains. The forebrain allows modern birds to navigate the skies. These Dinosaurs were smart and evolution was creating the tools that would bring flight to their ancestors. Check out the book for many more Dinosaur Fun Facts and those that Discovered them First!
