The City of Camarillo Library provided the venue for other Wonderful Dinosaur Fun Facts & Fiction Event. This was Max’s first time at “Family Story Time”. Parents & Kids learned about the PaulsPrehistoricPark.com and the actual Park. I read the newest version of “Is a Metal Dinosaur the Right Pet for You? I expanded it to 28 pages from 11. A few more tweaks and I will be ready to publish.
Max the T-Rex & I pose with our surprise visitor from the Park, a little Raptor, before the guests arrive (above). Below: Max & I are preparing for the Reading. Early arrivals meeting Max.
“Dinosaurs” by Steve Brusatte is always a favorite for Kids & Parents to learn about their favorite Dinosaurs and some they haven’t heard of before. The Cladograms (family trees) are very helpful with explaining the relationship between these Prehistoric Beasts. The historical time periods when the different Dinosaurs Ruled – Triassic, Jurassic & Cretaceous. The Allosaurus ruled during the late Jurassic Period when Tyrannosaurus Rex ancestors were no larger than an average human. Tyrannosaurus Rex arrived in the Late Cretaceous period over 65 million years ago and 80 million years after Allosaurus. The Earth looked very different when the Dinosaurs arrived on the scene. It had one supercontinent called Pangaea. This allowed the Dinosaurs to roam all over the World.
Steve Brusatte’s “Dinosaurs” is a huge book 17 inches by 14 inches which provides excellent size pictures for presenting to a group. A smaller size 14.5 X 12 was published in 2010. I have both versions they have the same content but a more manageable size. The only difference is the cover a Spinosaurus on the larger version and T-Rex on the more compact. One other minor difference is the picture of the Microraptor is 85% of actual size in the smaller version.
Millions of Years of Volcanic activity and Earthquakes caused Pangaea to breakup and separate creating the land masses we have today. One of the Story Time Books “Dinosnores” by Kelly S. DiPucchio has a fun explanation for the continental breakup. This fun tale claims the Dinosaurs Snored so Loud when they slept the Earth shook and the land split apart. We didn’t get to this book Tuesday Night. If you can’t wait until the next Dinosaur Story Time, check it out.
“Encyclopedia Prehistorica Dinosaurs” by Robert Sabuda is an excellent pop-up book. The pop-ups are of course fun, but the information is very educational. One of the pop-ups is a dinner party that was held in a full-size mold for a Dinosaur on New Year’s Eve of 1853. A time when few people had even heard of the word “Dinosaur”. This led to the discussion of another wonderful book (too long to read at Story Time), “The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins” by Barbara Kerley. Many of the illustrations are copies of Waterhouse Hawkins original sketches. It’s a true story of the Worlds First Full-Size Dinosaur Sculptures that still stand over 160 years later. I had discovered a Dinosaur book in Spanish “Descubre Dinosaurios” at the Camarillo Library, that also mentions the Waterhouse Hawkins Dinosaurs.
“Dinosaur Mountain: digging into the Jurassic Age” was discussed. I read my book “The Shy Triceratops” and “Dinosaur Parade” by Shari Halpern. Then it was time for our “How to Draw Dinosaurs” Activity. The Library has a large selection of books that can help you practice Drawing Dinosaurs and many other things. Check them out.
