Once a month ReadingtoKids.org provides volunteers for eight Elementary Schools in the Downtown Los Angeles area. Last Saturday was their 20th Anniversary! Books are selected for K thru 5th grade. This month the Kindergarten choice is Mo Willems “Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs”. I have read this book with one of my Prehistoric Pals several times at Libraries and the Kindergarten classes at Mountain View Elementary in Fillmore, CA. So, I just had to volunteer for the Kindergarten Class for this month’s Reading to Kids! I brought the Raptor twins with me. For a craft I used the patterns in “Make Your Own Paper Dinosaurs” by Sally and Stewart Walton. This book was recommended to me by Dona Hagemeyer Library Associate 2 at the Camarillo Library.
Derik and Byron were the listeners. Derik spoke only Spanish. This is one of the goals of ReadingtoKids.org, providing exposure to stories read in English to aid the Spanish only speakers with learning English. At Craft Time, Derik started tracing the Stegosaurus which showed me he could certainly make his own paper dinosaur. Byron and Derik spend a moment checking out the Raptors. Somehow a Pterosaur flew into one Raptors mouth.
Byron watches closely as I demonstrate “How to Draw a Dinosaur” using simple circles and ovals. Josephine reviews some fun parts of the Book with Derik & Byron. Thanks Josephine, it was fun reading the story with you. And Thanks to our Listeners Byron & Derik.
Kristen a 3rd grader from my reading club last month met me on the way back to the auditorium. She asked the Raptors names. Learning that one didn’t have a name yet, she suggested Jerry. Now both Raptor twins have a name – Jeffrey & Jerry. Thanks Kristen!
FYI: Last Months book for the 3rd graders was “Parrots Over Puerto Rico” by Cindy Trumbow with wonderful collage illustrations by Susan L. Roth. A Great Story to Celebrate Earth Day. How these beautiful Parrots that lived on this island for millions of years almost went extinct, when man arrived.
