For Halloween I will become the “Dinosaur Wizard”! I found a Gandalf Wizard Costume on Amazon for $34.49 including tax. The Hat, Robe and belt are in this package the beard and staff are sold separately. This is ok with me, because I will be a beardless Wizard. Plus, the staffs are plastic and I will show you how to make your own from a tree branch.
I’m not sure if it’s the drought combined with the wind, but I lost a few branches and tree tops from my Liquidambar Trees recently. Alternatively, I suspect that one of Antonio’s Large Pterosaur friends might have tried a landing in these Trees. However, when I question Antonio he just smiles. Well recycling is always fun. First, I cut away all the small branches from the piece I felt would make the best staff.
I needed an interesting top for the staff. Fortunately, a few “Pride of Madeira” (Echium candicans) plants that had died were being used in the landscape. Their unusual roots and twisted bases add to the Prehistoric Landscape of the Park. I found one that would work nicely for a top to my staff. I used a hand saw to cut off the root base. A ¼ inch double ended screw provided the perfect means to connect the two pieces of wood. I pre-drilled a 3/16 inch hole in the center of each piece of wood to make it easier to screw them together. Antonio, Brandie (the Brachiosaur), Hobbes (the T-Rex), Gary & Cindy (the Brontosaurs) and Xavier the Raptor pose with me and my new staff.
I used a light sand paper to smooth out some rough spots on the staff. Lemon Pledge provided a nice coating to freshen up all the wood. I have an Event to Show off my completed “Dinosaur Wizard” Costume. Stay Tune for the Big Costume Reveal, Dinosaur Pumpkin Carving & More!
