Last week We decided that Stephanie’s Scales and Spikes would follow Stanley’s color scheme. After using Ivory Gloss to cover the Scales & Spikes. Apple Red Metallic was applied. My experience with Stanley in this step taught me overspray can be a great design enhancement. When applying the Gloss Purple with an Artist Brush (after spraying into the paint can cap), I worked with the overspray to incorporate it into the overall design on both Stegosauruses. I did the same with the Hammered Gray on Stephanie. I’m sticking with the bird concept, that the males are typically brighter colors than the females. Therefore, less Apple Red Metallic & Gloss Purple on the body for Stephanie. Instead Hammered Gray and Stone Gray underneath vs. Gloss Turquoise on Stanley.
While the Purple Gloss & Hammered Gray were curing, I completed they remaining touch-ups to the Claws & Eyes. I use various sizes of Artist Brushes to assist with the details needed. The following day it was time to give Stephanie a Clear Coat. I like the Gloss and Paris my greyhound prefers it too! Matte or Satin finish are options, as well.
The Fossil Scales of the Stegosaurus have veins. It was thought this might be a display feature to attract a mate. However, there are no differences between the Scales of the Male & Female suggesting this was more for defense. The blood flow in the Scales could make them brighten and aid in the appearance of being much larger to a predator. Hopefully discouraging an attack. This reinforces the decision to paint Stephanie’s & Stanley’s Scales alike. Stegosaurus (roofed lizard) was so named in 1877, due the original belief that the scales laid flat on the back overlapping like shingles (tiles) on a roof. Early displays reflected 2 parallel rows of Scales. It is believed they were alternating rows. Stanley’s Scales are alternating while Stephanie has a couple that are parallel. Note the shapes are also different between the two. Stanley’s head and Spikes are different, as well. Every Artist has their vision. I’m lucky to have found two such nicely inspired Stegosauruses.
