For Paul I used the same color palate as Christopher. However, I used less of the Marigold. Christopher was my first experience creating stripes. I decided to make the stripes narrower and will use more of them with Paul. In addition, I will bring the green (satin Eden) on the belly and neck up higher to counter the blue stripes. I’m changing out Paul’s eyes from green to blue, so I will paint the area around the eyes blue (Maui Blue gloss).
I laid Paul on his side applying the rusty brown primer to the underside first, again spraying inside the legs. After the appropriate drying time, I placed him back on his feet and completed the primer application. Note: Lee our favorite lizard is still checking things out.
Then it was time to again lay Paul on his side and paint with flat Brown on the legs and other accessible areas. While lying on his side, I took the opportunity to paint the belly with the green (satin Eden). I used a 12 ½ inch X 7 ½ inch piece of cardboard to block overspray from the flat Brown. After an appropriate drying time, it was time to stand Paul up and finish the flat Brown again using the cardboard to prevent overspray this time on the green (satin Eden). Before masking off areas for painting, I used the cardboard to allowed for easy painting around the horns and bone tips around the shield (Ivory gloss) saving a considerable amount of blue tape.
Next the shield, horns, head and front legs were masked off to paint the gloss Maui Blue around the eyes and gloss Berry Pink inside the mouth. I extended the blue around the eyes down to the beak covering the nostril openings. Again I wanted the same color palate as Christopher, but with definite differences in the use of the colors. Then it was time to touch up any overspray on the green (satin Eden) and flat Brown on the belly and legs.
Then tape off stripes to apply gloss Maui Blue. Remove tape. Mask off areas to paint beak gloss Kona Brown
Next tape off areas to allow for painting shield Marigold gloss. Remove tape. Next I masked off the lower legs to paint the claws gloss Kona Brown. Then use the spray paint cap and artists paint brushes. Spray small amounts carefully into the cap, wet brush with paint and gently blend gloss Marigold around gloss Maui Blue stripes. Using the same process bring the green (satin Eden) up a little making a counter to the blue stripes.
After completing, apply several coats of gloss clear coat. The colors I selected were not all available in gloss – flat Brown, satin Eden. The clear coat provides a gloss finish for the entire dinosaur. Using the Masonite board and furniture dollies, I moved Paul to his foundation. Then I replace the plastic eyes using silicone glue.
