I made a trip to the Los Angeles Zoo to visit the “DINOSAURS UNEXTINCT” exhibit. It was great! Outside the exhibit is a Spinosaurus enjoying a meal. As you enter you are greeted by a couple of Brachiosaurus. You continue on the path to be entertained by one dinosaur after another. I’ll provide you a look at number of them. You’ll have to make a trip to the Los Angeles Zoo to see all the dinosaurs waiting for you. Some you may not be familiar – Citipati. A type of oviraptor, which means egg thief. Citipati fossils were frequently found surrounded by eggs which led archeologist to believe they were steeling eggs. But it turned out Citipati was just guarding its own eggs.
I quickly passed a Carnotaurus that looked very hungry and came upon a Dilophosaurus followed by its child. Make sure you are careful where you stand they have a poisonous spray. Although I’m pretty sure the ones at the Zoo just spray water. You continue passed a very spikey dinosaur to the official Selfie-Saurus. A Pachyrhinosaurus that is determined to pose with you.
The Pachyrhinosaurus are believed to be herd animals from studies of their fossil remains. That is not a broken horn on its head, but a “nasal boss”. A bony growth that may have been used to butt other members of the herd, an action to establish dominance.
Great Scott! This next picture might be PG-13. I tried to save the Triceratops but the hungry T-Rex would not yield!
Now time for some fun stuff for the kid in all of us. A Fossil Dig and a Robo-saurus! I couldn’t resist talking a turn at the controls.
Then you meet a family of Diabloceratops which were about the same size as an Indian Rhinoceros at 4,000 pounds! You have to see them in person the babies just hatched and are wobbling around. Most of the dinosaurs have some type of movement. So watch yourself! Finally a huge Raptor – the Utahraptor! There are a number of wall displays with most recent discoveries, tactile displays and other interesting information at the end of the exhibit. For example – a 122 foot long Apatosaurus finding, what a dinosaur’s skin might have felt like and theories of what happened to the dinosaurs. Make sure you checkout the gift shop as you exit the exhibit. Lots of great dinosaur stuff in there to enjoy too!
As I was taking in the rest of the Zoo, I discovered they have a couple of metal dinosaurs too. I will have to find out who the artist is that created these guys and where he lives for a future article. The “Dinosaurs Unextinct” exhibit has been extended to November 30th. Don’t miss it!
Enjoy, Paul and Prehistoric Pals
