Now that the stones are finished, the site needs prepping for placement. To prevent the Raptors from being knocked over in high winds burlap bags filled with sand were laid on top of the Raptors base frames. Even though there is a layer of bark under the frames to keep them off the soil, it can still be a damp environment. In addition, the bags rot. After clearing the area around each site. The sand from the bags is raked to set the stones.
Twelve inch long screw eyes are secured with concrete in the soil one each side of the Raptor Frames. In some areas the soil was extremely dry. Starting a small hole then adding a little water made the final digging much easier. After setting all the screw eyes, the soil and bark were raked back in place.
I found hooks and a rope at the local Do-It Center. After measuring and cutting, I burned the cut ends of the rope slightly to keep them from unravelling. Tied a knot at one end and slipped both hooks on before tying the final end. Make sure you have the hooks facing the right direction. Once hooked to the screw eye, I turned the screw eye perpendicular to the rope to tighten. Three of the Raptors – Alan, Jadon & Charlie have small bases. I doubled the rope with one in front and one behind their feet to keep it from moving around in gusty winds. Even though Blue Too “the Running Raptor” has much longer base, she will receive additional cabling as well.
The new Perches keep Blue Too, Alan, Jadon & Charlie off the soil, on a well drained surface during rainy weather further reducing the risk of rust. Plus, they look nice in the garden too!
